How to get a CDL
The whole sequence in outline, free. The order matters — and so do the clocks.
The CDL process is a sequence, and the sequence is where people get tripped up — not on the written tests. This is the outline, in order.
1. Training. Entry-level driver training from a registered provider is required before a first Class A or Class B skills test (figure under review). This site is not training.
2. Medical certification. A commercial driver must hold a valid medical certificate, and some operations require a specific form (figure under review).
3. The permit (CLP) and its knowledge tests. Pass the written tests the requirement matrix computes for you, and get the permit. This is the half this site practises.
4. The holding period. A permit must be held for a period before a skills test (figure under review).
5. The skills test. Pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, and the on-road drive. This half is described here; this site does not prepare you for it.
6. The licence. Pass the skills test and the licence is issued, with the class and any endorsements you earned.
What varies by state — the fees, the waits, the booking, the exact numbers behind the steps above — lives on the state pages, and each is stated only once verified. Nothing here asserts a figure from memory.
